Unique considerations when treating children and adolescents with IBD include attention to the effects and risks of the treatments on growth and development, bone health, and psychosocial functioning. New alternatives of treatment still are needed in this context for safer and longer outcomes.
The benefits of using steroids, immunosuppressants or biologics need to be carefully weighed against the risks: effects of the treatments on growth and development, bone health, and psychosocial functioning. Taken together, novel therapeutic approaches that will demonstrate adequate efficacy combined with acceptable safety profiles are continually needed.
