Sweet’s Syndrome Successfully Treated with Granulocyte and Monocyte Adsorption Apheresis.
After the first session of GMA therapy, all symptoms including the erythematous lesions and fever were completely resolved, and serum G-CSF level was reduced. Leukocyte count, neutrophil count, serum amyloid A protein, and CRP levels were restored within normal ranges by 2 weeks. Thus, GMA therapy can successfully treat a patient with recurrent Sweet’s syndrome, potentially related to the restoration of elevated serum G-CSF levels.

Treatment of a Case of Ulcerative Colitis with Sacroiliitis Using Granulocyte and Monocyte Adsorption Apheresis
Hitoshi Ichikawa 1, Jin Imai, Hajime Mizukami, Takayuki Shirai, Norihito Watanabe, Tokai J Exp Clin Med. 2017 Jul 20;42(2):64-66.
Unlike conventional medication, GMA apheresis has no serious adverse effects. We present the first report of a UC patient with sacroiliitis, who responded well to GMA therapy. GMA apheresis may be considered a new treatment option for UC-associated spondyloarthropathy that is refractory or tolerant to conventional treatment.

Is Adsorptive Granulocyte and Monocyte Apheresis Effective as an Alternative Treatment Option in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis?
Seong Ran Jeon 1 , Gut Liver. 2017 Mar 15;11(2):171-172.
The outcomes of these studies, suggest that patients with short duration UC with inevitable use of steroid show relapse; therefore, implementing GMA as soon as possible can be expected to have a better response.

Pharmacological- and non-pharmacological therapeutic approaches in inflammatory bowel disease in adults.
Gerda C Leitner 1, Harald Vogelsang 1 , World J Gastrointest Pharmacol Ther. 2016 Feb 6;7(1):5-20.
As therapeutic alternative the main mediators of the disease, namely the activated pro-inflammatory cytokine producing leukocytes can be selectively removed via two apheresis systems (Adacolumn and Cellsorba) in steroid-refractory or dependent cases. Extracorporeal photopheresis results in an increase of regulatory B cells, regulatory CD8(+) T cells and T-regs Type 1. Both types of apheresis were able to induce clinical remission and mucosal healing accompanied by tapering of steroids.

Effects of Granulocyte and Monocyte Adsorptive Apheresis in Renal Transplantation Recipients With Concomitant Cytomegalovirus Infection.
T Naganuma 1, Y Takemoto 2, T Iwai 2, N Kuwabara 2, J Uchida 2, T Nakatani 2, K Kitamura 3, A Masuda 3, K Ohmori 4, M Matsuura 5, H Nakase 5 , Transplant Proc. 2016 Apr;48(3):929-32.
This case series found that GMAA in combination with antiviral drugs may shorten the duration of treatment against CMV infection in renal transplant recipients. Further studies in a larger number of patients are required to confirm these results.

Adacolumn Granulocyte-Apheresis for Alcoholic Hepatitis: Preliminary Study
V Morabito 1, S Novelli 2, L Poli 3, G Ferretti 4, F Ruberto 5, F Pugliese 5, R Pretagostini 3, P B Berloco 3, M Rossi 3 , Transplant Proc. 2016 Mar;48(2):352-8.
The Adacolumn apheresis was safe and was able to determine an improvement of clinical status of patients with reduction of inflammatory markers. More patients are needed to validate these results.

Safety and efficacy of granulocyte/monocyte apheresis in steroid-dependent active ulcerative colitis with insufficient response or intolerance to immunosuppressants and/or biologics (ART trial): 12-week interim results.
Axel Dignass 1, Ayesha Akbar 2, Ailsa Hart 2, Sreedhar Subramanian 3, Gilles Bommelaer 4, Daniel C Baumgart 5, Jean-Charles Grimaud 6, Guillaume Cadiot 7, Richard Makins 8, Syed Hoque 9, Guillaume Bouguen 10, Bruno Bonaz 11 , J Crohns Colitis. 2016 Jul;10(7):812-20.
At Week 12, Adacolumn provided significant clinical benefit in a large cohort of steroid-dependent ulcerative colitis patients with previous failure to immunosuppressant and/or biologic treatment, with a favourable safety profile. These results are consistent with previous studies and support Adacolumn use in this difficult-to-treat patient subgroup.

The overall efficacy of GMA in patients with active UC who were taking first-line medications or were corticosteroid refractory was encouraging. Additionally, GMA was well tolerated and had a good safety profile.

Kajsa Edfors 1, Dagny Ståhlberg 1, Charlotte Söderman 1 , Ther Apher Dial. 2016 Feb;20(1):79-85.
Most frequently reported was headache (N = 4). GMA seems to be a valuable adjuvant treatment regime in the care of patients with refractory IBD.
